This guide has been written to assist you in solving your engine problems, and to explain
the options that are available to you.
CONFUSED?
Are you confused as to what to do with your car's engine? Well it's simple really.
Don't do anything until you have done your research. All you need to do is ask three simple questions:
1. What are you getting?
2. What warranty are you being offered?
3. Who are you dealing with?
WHAT ARE YOU GETTING?
When it comes to engines, there are basically three options available to you. You need to be aware of each of the options and the MAJOR differences between them. Your options are: a fully reconditioned engine, OR a rebuilt engine OR a second-hand or imported engine. So what do these terms mean?
A RECONDITIONED ENGINE -
Is by far the most comprehensive and cost effective option you have. This is a long-term solution to a serious problem. A reconditioned engine as supplied by Engines Direct has:
> Been dismantled to the bare block, cleaned and inspected.
> Had ALL components inspected and/or machined.
> Had the engine block bored, honed and machined.
> Had the crankshaft and camshaft machined as necessary.
> Had the cylinder head completely reconditioned.
> Had new parts installed as required, including: lifters, pistons, rings, bearings, timing chain, guides, seals and gaskets etc.
> Been assembled to the manufacturer's clearances.
At Engines Direct - the above reconditioning process is carried out to industry standards and to the original Manufacturer's specifi cations.
A REBUILT, OVERHAULED OR REPAIRED ENGINE -
This is VERY different from a fully Reconditioned Engine in that it is NOT fully dismantled and machined, and the number of parts replaced is far less.
Basically speaking, a Rebuilt, Overhauled or Repaired Engine has the bores honed, new piston rings and bearings fi tted, plus a valve grind. The long-term effectiveness
of this solution will greatly depend on the general condition of other major engine components, such as the engine block, crankshaft, camshaft and timing components.
A SECOND HAND OR IMPORTED ENGINE -
This option is exactly what it says. It is a used engine that does not have a known history. Unfortunately the buyer does not know at the time of purchase how good or bad the engine really is. Like everything purchased second hand - there is a gamble with this option!
In fact, you could very well be buying someone else's problems. Therefore the life expectancy of this type of engine is unknown. That is why a typical warranty of these type of engines is only 3 to 6 months, and is generally a very limited parts only warranty.
